Teachers teach most by who they are,
more with what they do,
less with what they say.
When I signed up for the student of life program (not the real program, if such exists), I made it a point to always be on the look out for teachers.
Four years ago, I wrote a speech that I have hoped to deliver by this year during an award ceremony and take the opportunity to thank my teachers.
Since there are only a few things/ situations/ events that I can control (or none at all), the said recognition might have been postponed or perhaps it just was not for me from the very beginning. However, that does not mean that I will not be allowed to express my gratitude towards:
Mama who taught me hard work, patience, and sacrifice.
Papa who taught me to love adventure, achievement, and excellence.
Rona who taught me that work becomes lighter with a dash of fun and good friends and that when we share enthusiasm we have a chance to make other people happy.
KL who taught me to be grateful about everything; to give everybody a chance, above all to always give myself a chance, and; that it’s OK to cry.
Dandee who taught me that the most complicated situations can be simplified, that there is always a way to get what I want but when things don’t work out, I should not burden myself with it because the result is God’s job, I only have to do my best.
Paolo who taught me that energy is contagious; that I can honor my parents and go for my dreams at the same time; and that going to confession takes a lot of humility and courage but it’s a great way to release baggage knowing that I am forgiven, it’s easier to forgive myself.
Red who taught me that it is easy to meet new friends; that having a vision gives us courage to do the necessary actions, however uncomfortable at times.
Erwin who taught me that God is faithful through his favorite verse: For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)
Kuya Percy and Ate Venus who taught me to have faith in people, believing in me even when I did not have anything to show for it.
Angel, my 4-year old niece, who taught me that it is OK to be curious and ask questions, that it’s OK to ask for help, that it’s OK to be happy or be amazed about the simplest things, that it’s OK to be a child again, and;
Robert who taught me that life will always throw at me good days in almost equal quantity as the bad days; that most bad days are sprinkled with pleasant surprises that turn out to be life’s greatest gifts; and that it is in giving love that I receive it, in the same way that I get more happiness when I give it away.
